MEDICAL FACTOR OF CHESTNUT HONEY – DEVELOPMENT OF QUALITY CONTROL AND TECHNOLOGY FOR MEDICAL HONEY
There is an important development project of Slovene researchers dealing with the fact that chestnut honey is of great use to medicine. The project connects the Biotechnological Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, the Jožef Stefan Institute, and two renowned Slovenian companies: Medex and Tosama. The project named “MEDICAL FACTOR OF CHESTNUT HONEY – Development of quality control and technology for medical chestnut honey” was presented in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in July 2022.
The joint research project pursues two goals:
1. Development of specific laboratory tests and measurement procedures that will enable measuring specific biological activities of chestnut honey.
2. Development of honey production technologies for increased antimicrobial activity.
At Tosama, we expect a lot from the project but above all that we will gain new knowledge about the specific properties of chestnut honey useful for future development of wound care products. The project is aimed at the development of robust quality control tests. They will provide us with more detailed and specific data on the chemical and biological properties of chestnut honey that are reflected in the speed and quality of wound healing.
